On September 2nd, 2011,
Mary Long gathered up her three younger children (Charity, Joshua, and Bently) to walk to the bus stop to pick up Jacob, their eldest brother, from the bus stop. Jacob had just started his first year of school. When Mary got to the bus stop, she left the three younger children on the sidewalk and went to talk to the bus driver about Jacob. He had been dropped off at the wrong bus stop the day before and Mary wanted to make sure that the driver knew where to drop her son off at. She was concerned that something would happen to her if he was dropped off at the wrong stop. While she was talking to the bus driver, a woman who had picked up her own daughter, went around the bus and ran over 1-year-old Bently. Bently was taken to McCullough-Hyde Hospital in Oxford with life threatening injuries and was pronunced dead a short time later. So far, the woman who was driving the SUV has not been charged in the death of Bently. The authorities say that they have conflicting reports as to what happened and cannot charge her with anything, if at all, until they have more details. Most news sources, say the the baby ran out into the street in front of the SUV, the driver's mother says that someone pushed him in front of the SUV, while one witness says that the SUV went up on the curb and hit him. Regardless of how it happened, the driver of the SUV should not have been behind the wheel of a vehicle. Her license were suspended. She also should not have gone around a stopped school bus where children were present. Even if the lights on the bus were not on, some witnesses say that they were still on, she should have used a little more caution and been a little more patient. 09/02/2011 1-year-old dies after being hit by SUV 09/05/2011 Police: 1-Year-Old Dies After Being Struck By SUV Community Remembers Boy Killed In Butler Co.
